Larger New Build Projects

London School of Hygeine & Tropical Medicine
Wheelers provided full QS services for this complex and constrained project to infill an existing courtyard to a Grade II listed building originally constructed in 1920 to provide meeting/lecture theatres main reception & breakout, research offices, stair cases lifts & lobbies, bridge links, risers and other sundry support areas with an approximate total gross internal floor area of 2,500m².

This project was to enhance accommodation for the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, the world renowned academic and research institution which is part of London University. The large suspended auditorium provided 285 seats within an elliptical footprint and was designed to be split into two separate areas using a motorised sliding/folding acoustic division wall. A separate small lecture theatre provided 95 seats on the ground floor adjacent to the main break out area beneath a feature barisol ceiling. The new facility was fully air conditioned utilising ground water cooling from newly drilled boreholes within existing vaults and in combination with banks of photovoltaic cells helped to deliver a state-of-the-art sustainable solution.
