Scientific Projects

The Wellcome Trust Genome Campus, Hinxton
Designed by Sheppard Robson and completed in 1997, the 32,000 m² South Campus development at Hinxton Hall, Cambridgeshire provided the original scientific research hub for The Wellcome Trust funded Genome Mapping Project as well as the MRC funded Human Genome Mapping Project and the European Bioinformatics Institute in purpose made high quality buildings all set within landscaped parkland. The carefully configured and extensive Category 2 laboratories were supported by data, support, library and canteen areas in a form which allowed flexibility of precise function and which encouraged interactivity between research personnel. The genome mapping project, originally estimated to require twenty years to achieve, was published in considerably less than half that time, aided in part it is believed, by the environment in which the research was undertaken.

Wheelers provided full QS services on this project, which was executed under bespoke design, manage and construct terms formulated with the Client’s lawyers. It is a landmark project in many respects, not least for Wheelers.
